Gallery 8: Art in Motion Program
Proposed Project description
Gallery 8 proposes to deliver a 12-month program of pop-up exhibitions, live music nights, Art Battles and creative workshops in Southport on the Gold Coast.
The program will provide paid opportunities for emerging and established Queensland visual artists, musicians, DJs, performers, workshop facilitators and arts workers.
Each major pop-up exhibition will launch with an accessible opening-night event featuring live entertainment.
Selected openings will include an Art Battle in which artists create work live before an audience, receive a participation fee and have the opportunity to auction their finished artwork.
A dedicated First Nations-led pop-up exhibition will be developed in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and an appropriately experienced First Nations curator or cultural advisor.
The program will reduce the financial barriers faced by emerging artists and performers, create opportunities for direct income and introduce new audiences to contemporary art through welcoming, multidisciplinary events.
Five pop-up exhibitions presenting emerging and mid-career Queensland visual artists who have limited access to established commercial galleries. Each major exhibition is expected to involve approximately 25–30 artists, creating up to 150 artist participation opportunities across the year. Artists may generate income through fees, auctions and artwork sales.
Artist and Musician Podcast Sessions
Gallery 8 will produce a series of podcast sessions featuring participating visual artists and live musicians. Recorded through Gallery 8’s Blue Room studio, the sessions will provide artists with a platform to discuss their creative practice, current work and professional journey.
Selected sessions may include live or recorded musical performances and conversations between artists working across different disciplines. The podcast content will be shared digitally to extend the reach of the program, promote participating creatives and create reusable professional content for artists’ portfolios and social media.
Three Art Battles - Three live Art Battles will be presented alongside selected community exhibitions. Participating artists will create work before a public audience, build confidence, connect with other creatives and have opportunities to generate income through artist fees, artwork sales or auctions.
Emerging live music or performer nights - At least 20 paid Queensland musicians or performers for exhibition openings and dedicated music nights. These events will strengthen collaboration between visual artists and performers while attracting broader audiences to the gallery.
six workshops - Workshops will be led by paid artists or arts worker to support artists eg. 1. Preparing artwork for a professional exhibition 2. Creating limited-edition prints 3. Professional artwork scanning 4. First Nations-led Cultural Practice Workshop 5. Social Media and Content for Artists 6. Live Art and Art Battle Preparation
Subject to funding -Up to 125 Funded Artwork Scans
Subject to funding, Gallery 8 will provide up to 125 professional artwork scans across the 12-month program. Participating artists will receive a high-resolution archival TIFF and web-ready file to support portfolios, promotion, grant applications and authorised reproduction.
Scan allocations will be managed across the exhibition program, with additional scans available at Gallery 8’s reduced artist rate.
One First Nations-led exhibition - will be developed with confirmed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and artists, supported by a paid First Nations cultural adviser and Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property principles will guide the planning and delivery of the project.
