Frequently Asked Questions
-
At Gallery 8, professional artwork scanning uses a controlled, calibrated light source that moves precisely across the surface of the artwork to create a highly accurate, colour-managed digital file.
This controlled capture process helps preserve fine detail, tonal variation, surface texture and subtle colour information -making it especially suited to fine art reproduction, archival recording and large-format printing.
Photography can produce good results, but it introduces more variables, including lens distortion, lighting inconsistencies, reflections and colour shifts. For artworks that need to be reproduced at large scale, or for textured and materially complex pieces, high-resolution scanning generally provides greater consistency and detail.
For artists wanting the most accurate digital master for giclée printing, edition production or long-term archiving, professional fine art scanning offers a highly controlled and repeatable solution.

-
In many cases, yes. Removing glass helps eliminate reflections and ensures the highest image quality. If you’re unsure, contact us before your appointment.

We recommend that works be dry before bringing them in. Charcoal, graphite, and pastel works should be fixed prior to arrival. For most scanning, works should be unframed — though framed works can be scanned through glass when deframing is not practical.

Oversized Artworks
Our flatbed scanning area is 1219 × 1788 mm. Larger artworks may require multiple passes and professional stitching. Additional scanning from $80, depending on size and complexity.
